If you thought you had to sit back and hold your breath after the Liverpool game, Leeds decided to take the drama up a notch against Bournemouth on Saturday. Now on their first two-match winning run of this Premier League campaign, Leeds seem to have found nothing but motivation and have played like a team fighting back to the end for two incredible games in a row.

After a thrilling win over Liverpool at Anfield, the Whites are inspired. Back at Elland Road, Leeds started aggressively and Crescencio Summervilla managed to equalize with a penalty inside the first sixty seconds of the game. Rodrigo converted the penalty – a beautifully taken shot to the left of the net as the Bournemouth keeper diverted it – and Leeds were all electric.

The energy was palpable throughout the stadium, with Leeds winning a corner kick on a few other occasions and Brendan Aaronson heading into the area to threaten. However, just as the momentum seemed to have swung entirely in the home side’s favour, Marcus Tavenier managed to slot home a Bournemouth goal past Illan Meslier who appeared out of nowhere. From a cross, Leeds couldn’t clear it and Tavennier was admirable. It was a frustrating moment for the team and the disappointment on Jesse Marsh’s face was clear as the incredible atmosphere that had been created was completely shattered.

Leeds looked more and more worried as the half went on and in the 19th minute, Tavernier got on the end of a long ball and Christensen, who seemed to think Meslier would be out for him, cleared but instead stayed away. He managed to get a block on, but Tavenier pounced on the rebound before finding Philippe Billings, who fired his shot almost into the top left corner. Air rushed out of the building and Leeds was stunned.

The half ended without another goal, but not without good looks from both teams. Perhaps the most memorable piece came from Bournemouth’s counter-attack to a Leeds corner, where Meslier was forced to leave his box, saving a certain goal if not handled well.

After half-time, Marsh made a change, bringing on Wilfried Gnondo for Jack Harrison. Leeds looked very lively at the start of the half, controlling possession and getting some better looks in the attacking third. However, just as the white men were seen as a threat, disaster struck. Bournemouth countered swiftly in the 48th minute, with Dominic Solanke finishing just in front of goal with a back-heel finish.

In response to the two-goal deficit, Marsh brought on Sam Greenwood for Mark Rocca and made an immediate impact in midfield. As before, Leeds tried to get back into the game. Possession worked well and in the 60th minute Christensen crossed a ball for Summerville on the left side of the box. He laid it off to Pascal Struic, whose shot was blocked and bounced off Greenwood, who squared up and struck a beautiful shot into the top left corner.

From that point on, Leeds had hope. The players ran harder, played with more confidence, and the crowd that had booed and jeered at halftime was now completely behind the team. Rodrigo had a chance that he missed high and wide, but that added to the excitement. Then, in the 68th minute, Leeds were awarded a corner and Greenwood’s ball found captain Liam Cooper with a lovely low header to equalise. Elland Road erupted again as Bournemouth’s players were stunned.

All things being equal now, Leeds certainly regained the momentum, but in a way, the game felt like a fresh start. Bournemouth began to push forward more and both teams had clear chances. Bournemouth almost took the lead with Jack Stacey’s shot from the right and, later, Leeds had a chance with Aaronson’s shot which was deflected just short of goal.

However, Leeds fought back in the final 10 minutes. Again they started to have possession and seemed to have every chance. And then in 84

Minutes, that work paid off in a big way. From a Bournemouth free-kick, Cooper delivered a lovely header to Gnondo, who carried the ball almost the length of the pitch and sent a lovely pass to Summerville for another winner in the dying minutes. Again, the views were stunning. Doing things in Liverpool was a feeling unlike any other, but doing it at home is always an experience to be enjoyed.

There is still a lot to improve. At several moments, the game was so close to Leeds that they let it go and Bournemouth were able to take advantage, 1-0, 1-2. Defense didn’t need it, too many mistakes and mental errors hindered their ability to see it in dramatic fashion. But nothing is easy in the Premier League and to have the resilience and fighting spirit to get back into the game and not only get a point but go on and get a win was absolutely inspiring.

With all the discontent surrounding the club in recent weeks, both of these wins are alive and well. Everyone associated with the club knew that Jesse Marsh’s job was on the line in these last few games and this manager, these players and this team responded in an absolutely massive way in the rarest moments of his time at the club.
