Detroit Lions: Ten Thoughts From A Disappointing Week Five Loss
That means if you’re sick of scrolling through the endless number of Hallmark, cut-throat Christmas movies that Hulu has to offer, let us bring you your own version of entertainment. close to a cold Friday night.
Friday 7:30 p.m. ET, head over to our Twitch page, and for the next 2 hours, we’ll be running a Madden simulation of the Lions vs. Panthers.
If you’ve never seen our Madden simulation, here’s exactly how it works: We’ll set lineups as close to reality as we can predict based on injury reports, then let the computer control the two teams. From there, we let Madden take over. I’ll be there to provide live commentary during the game, answering any Lions questions you may have.
Given the wackiness of Madden, it’s a fun time, and you can even play the score channel as a result, too. The Lions defense did not show any meaningful play against the Panthers. So we distributed not very good grades.

For the past week, Detroit Lions fans have been praying for a Christmas miracle. After a 1-6 start to the season, the Lions could find themselves in a playoff spot on the schedule on Dec. 25. Everyone did their job: the Giants lost, the Chiefs lost, the Seahawks lost. Heck, even the Eagles are gone!
But the Lions failed to take care of their business. In fact, they hardly showed up for work. The Carolina Panthers took from the opening whistle that – in the words of Dan Campbell – “absolutely kicking ass.”
While there were some issues on Saturday, I mostly agree with Campbell’s assessment. It was a very hard hit. Let’s take a look at the report card for week 16.
Panthers Vs. Lions Player Props
It’s hard to blame Jared Goff for this one. Without a running game to help take the pressure off him, Goff completed 25-of-42 passes for 355 yards and three scores. He was able to push the ball down the field effectively and connected on some deep shots. His average of 8.45 yards per pass was the highest of the week and third highest among quarterbacks who threw more than 25 times.
That said, cable has become very expensive. The Lions had a chance to take the lead, which would surely change the course of the rest of the game. Whether it was Goff’s fault or that of center Frank Ragnow is debatable, but in the end it was Goff who made sure the ball didn’t hit the ground.
Still, it was an overall solid game from Goff, who showed toughness by taking some big hits, maintained a solid presence in the pocket, and did it all by posting cool stories of time.
Jamaal Williams and D’Andre Swift combined for 23 yards on 11 carries and were both ineffective in the receiving game.

The Lions’ rushing attack has been, more or less, dead for a few weeks now, and while the offensive line certainly isn’t helping the situation, Detroit’s running backs aren’t running reliably, and aren’t they are broken.
Handling In fact, for the entire season, the Lions rank tied for 26th in yards after contact per rush (1.4) in the running game.
Shane Zylstra is one of maybe two or three players who can hold his head high for his performance on Saturday. In just 29 snaps, Zylstra caught five passes for 26 yards and three touchdowns — becoming the second Lions tight end all-time to score three points in a game (Joe Fauria). Rookie James Mitchell also threw for a career-high 31 yards, including a 22-yard catch-and-run.
DJ Chark made some explosive plays, but Josh Reynolds’ fumble (and pass interference) late in the game essentially sealed the loss for the Lions. Amon-Ra St. Brown continued to struggle
