Brighton started the game at an incredible pace and forced Silva into two clearances off the line before Trossard scored in the fifth minute. He rounded Kepa before crossing Cucurella on the line. Loftus-Cheek scored Chelsea’s first goal of the first half after heading in a March corner in the 14th minute. Sanchez had to make a great save, the most impressive from Gallagher’s header, but Brighton hit a third before the break as Chalobah headed Estupinan’s cross into his own net. Havertz quickly pulled one back early in the second half when he headed home after Gallagher’s perfect cross. Chelsea pressed for more goals but to no avail and Gross wrapped up the game in extra time when he scored from a rebound, after two shots from Mendy Nsiso had been saved, to make it 4-1.

Chelsea’s early pressure in the penalty area eventually paid dividends. Trossard dispossessed Thiago Silva on the edge of our box, before playing a neat one and two with Mitoma.

Gallagher must have thought he was lucky then to see a header that was needed, only for the Spanish goalkeeper’s superiority to deny Brighton again.

Havertz, close to goal, lofted the ball perfectly after bringing down Loftus-Cheek, but his left-footed shot curled around the post for a corner.

The Seagulls then added a third before half-time, with the Blues scoring their second of the evening, when Chaloba followed Estupinan’s low cross and flicked the ball past Kepa.

Edouard Mendy replaced Kepa at half-time to make his first appearance for the Blues since beating West Ham in early September but it was a change in formation that ensured Chelsea began the second half much brighter.

We saw a much more direct threat just after the start of the second period, with Havertz adding to his tally with a powerful header on Tuesday, after Gallagher had picked him out with a cross sent six yards from goal.

The German could have doubled his tally on the hour mark after Sánchez tapped in Mount’s corner, although his effort was wide of the target.

Aubameyang, brought on to the grass on 64 minutes, then tested Sanchez with a direct run down the left, the Spaniard equalizing his low drive as he curled out for a corner. The resulting set piece went to Ben Chilwell, who pulled over another try.

Móta came close with a wrist drop on his second shot at goal of the tournament, but again, it was only for the 24-year-old.

The Blues dominated proceedings from then on, although the hosts tried to catch Potter’s side on the counter-attack as we reached the closing stages.

Havertz was again in the right place as Loftus-Cheek pressed back from the byline, but he leaned back as he sent a shot through the visiting supporters and over Sanchez’s bar.

The fifth goal of the game came in stoppage time. After a smart double save from Mendy to deny Nsiso, Pascal Gross headed in the rebound despite a VAR check for offside.

Potter made two changes to the side that lost to RB Salzburg in midweek, with Mason Mount striker replacing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in place of Jorginho.
