But the first 45 minutes defied even the grandest of predictions, with the teams mostly playing to a 0-0 halftime stalemate. Chelsea were threatened several times by Brighton’s turnovers, confused in many situations where they had the advantage in numbers. Brighton kept the ball well at times, but apart from Bisuma’s isolated shot, the keeper never threatened the goal.

Brighton And Hove Albion 4 1 Chelsea: Potter Suffers Crushing First Blues Defeat Against Former Club

The second half … was more of the same, with Brighton’s flurry of chances in the final 10 minutes leading to some heartbreaking moments, but no goals. His first victory since taking charge of Chelsea in Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League defeat.

Potter left Brighton to succeed outgoing coach Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea last month, returning to the south coast to face his former employers for the first time after going unbeaten in nine games in all competitions at his new club.

But the hosts got off to a blistering start against a determined Potter side at the Amex Stadium, taking the lead within five minutes through Leandro Trossard’s superb goal.

Breathless Brighton kept coming and Ruben Loftus-Cheek quickly fired a second into their own net after turning a corner, Trevo Chalobar making it three for Brighton three minutes before the interval with another own goal.

Chelsea started well after the break and came back three minutes into the second half through Kai Havertz’s header, but the damage was already done and Potter’s side could not come back.

Pascal Gross’ late fourth goal capped a fine evening for Potter’s successor Roberto Di Zarbi, as the first win of his reign lifted Brighton to seventh in the standings, with Chelsea in fifth, eight points behind leaders Manchester City.

Chelsea are fifth in the Premier League and Brighton are seventh. The Blues face Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League before hosting Arsenal next weekend. Brighton travel to Wolves for their next league game.

Brighton started the game at an incredible pace and forced Silva into two clearances off the line before Trossard scored in the fifth minute. He rounded Kepa before crossing Cucurella on the line. Loftus-Cheek scored Chelsea’s first goal of the first half after heading in a March corner in the 14th minute. Sanchez had to make a great save, the most impressive from Gallagher’s header, but Brighton hit a third before the break as Chalobah headed Estupinan’s cross into his own net. Havertz quickly pulled one back early in the second half when he headed home after Gallagher’s perfect cross. Chelsea pressed for more goals but to no avail and Gross wrapped up the game in extra time when he scored from a rebound, after two shots from Mendy Nsiso had been saved, to make it 4-1.

It was a 4-1 reverse on the south coast. The hosts were still unbeaten going into the game under new Italian coach Roberto Di Zarbi and went in search of their first three points since September from an early start in East Sussex, piling early pressure on the home fans.

It meant Thiago Silva had to show his true talent just three minutes into the contest, first nodding a Leandro Trossard header over the bar, before making a carbon copy clearance from Estupinan’s shot moments later.

Chelsea’s early pressure in the penalty area eventually paid dividends. Trossard dispossessed Thiago Silva on the edge of our box, before playing a neat one and two with Mitoma.

Despite taking the lead, De Zarby’s Seagulls didn’t stop there. A corner kick saw the home side double their advantage, with Loftus-Cheek deflecting into his own net as the corner kick bounced off his left knee and Kepa went down.

We soon showed signs of a response, with Chelsea’s best chance to halve the deficit coming on 17 minutes, when Sanchez denied Gallagher from eight yards. The rebound then came for Pulisic, but the American missed the target completely with his volley.

Gallagher must have thought he was lucky then to see a header that was needed, only for the Spanish goalkeeper’s superiority to deny Brighton again.

Havertz, close to goal, lofted the ball perfectly after bringing down Loftus-Cheek, but his left-footed shot curled around the post for a corner.

The Seagulls then added a third before half-time, with the Blues scoring their second of the evening, when Chaloba followed Estupinan’s low cross and flicked the ball past Kepa.

Edouard Mendy replaced Kepa at half-time to make his first appearance for the Blues since beating West Ham in early September but it was a change in formation that ensured Chelsea began the second half much brighter.

We saw a much more direct threat just after the start of the second period, with Havertz adding to his tally with a powerful header on Tuesday, after Gallagher had picked him out with a cross sent six yards from goal.

The German could have doubled his tally on the hour mark after Sánchez tapped in Mount’s corner, although his effort was wide of the target.

Aubameyang, brought on to the grass on 64 minutes, then tested Sanchez with a direct run down the left, the Spaniard equalizing his low drive as he curled out for a corner. The resulting set piece went to Ben Chilwell, who pulled over another try.

Móta came close with a wrist drop on his second shot at goal of the tournament, but again, it was only for the 24-year-old.

The Blues dominated proceedings from then on, although the hosts tried to catch Potter’s side on the counter-attack as we reached the closing stages.

Havertz was again in the right place as Loftus-Cheek pressed back from the byline, but he leaned back as he sent a shot through the visiting supporters and over Sanchez’s bar.

The fifth goal of the game came in stoppage time. After a smart double save from Mendy to deny Nsiso, Pascal Gross headed in the rebound despite a VAR check for offside.

Potter made two changes to the side that lost to RB Salzburg in midweek, with Mason Mount striker replacing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in place of Jorginho.

Brighton Blow Chelsea Away As Graham Potter Endures Nightmare Seagulls Return

Chelsea, who wore our new mole third shirt for the first time this evening, were as expected: Sterling and Pulisic held the width just as they did in Austria, supported by Gallagher and Mount Prime Minister Havertz.

It was three goals again for the third game in a row from Chalobah, Thiago Silva and Cucurella, the second game back that saw the team perform so well last season.

After the interval, Loftus-Cheek came right back as we moved to a flat back four, leaving Kovacic alone in a deep midfield role, with five attackers in front of him.

Sterling and Pulisic were wide, but switched in the second half. We finished the tournament with Havertz, Broza and Aubameyang all in forward roles, our No.9 in the middle of the three.
