Bayern Munich looked… tired and distracted. In the first 21 minutes, Bayern scored 3-0. Since the third goal was a penalty, I won’t dwell too much on it. However, the first two were open goals from play, where Bayern were simply outplayed. All the steam that Julian Nagelsmann had built up for this team completely evaporated in 20 minutes. Although Bayern technically had more shots and more shots on goal, most were 3-0 down. The urgency was there but when they pushed on they left holes at the back which Gladbach easily exploited. After making it 5-0, Gladbach seemed content to sit back, knowing they had not only won, but blown Bayern Munich out of the water.
This wasn’t some random, spare set rolled out of Munich. It was the best of the best. This is without a doubt their strongest starting line-up, including the centre-back trio of Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzt. Was it a random day off for all three? I doubt it would be a wild success. Something had to go off. While Kimmich had individual moments of grace, overall he had a game to forget.
Also, Bayern’s defense was tough on the Swiss cheese. Wave after wave, they simply let Gladbach dictate the tempo of the game. Although Bayern were often able to push forward, their attack lacked lethality and left them open to Gladbach’s quick counter-attacks. Lucas Hernandez was just as awful from the start, never really proving himself. They never had an answer to Gladbach’s attack from the start. Breel Embolo and Ramy Bensebaïnieach managed a brace against this Bayern defence, which is unlike the elite we have seen in both the Bundesliga and Champions League this year. While it’s too early to worry about Nagelsmann, it’s worth noting that it wasn’t just a 3-1, 3-2 defeat, but an outright 5-0, which is usually reserved for Bayern’s opponents. Manuel Neuer also had an off day as he had to stop some goals, at least at first glance. But I don’t want to put the blame on Neuer.
As you can see from this game on Sofascore, apart from Serge Gnabry and Joshua Kimmich, the rest of the Bayern team received a terrible rating. No one on defense earned more than 6.5 and the rest of the team averaged less than 7.0. Well, your eyes didn’t lie, Bayern were truly devastating tonight. Julian Nagelsmann split his team into a formation that Bayern Munich don’t really use – 4-3-3. In the first game against Cologne, he played 4-2-3-1 and against Ajax – 3-4-3. This time it’s time for another test in the formation of a young coach.

Josip Stanisic, normally a defender, did not play. 6 ahead of Dayota Upamecano and Tanguy Nianzou, while Torben Rhein and Michael Cuisance played as the two no. 8s behind the top three of Eric Maxim Choup-Moting, Malik Tillmann and Joshua Zirkzee. The result was not so satisfactory. the midfield and wing pressure that Nagelsmann seems to be trying to apply was still there, but in terms of attacks the effort was average at best. And for good reason, it was the first time Bayern had played in a 4-3-3 formation in a long time, with former manager Hansi Flick usually opting for a standard 4-2-3-1.
Whether this formation will be mainstream or a one-off experiment remains to be seen, but judging by how it’s played out, it’s unlikely Nagelsmann will switch to it anytime soon.
For some reason, this game wasn’t as intense as the last two Bayern played last week. Both games against Cologne and Ajax were entertaining and fast-paced, so Bayern fans could come away with a lot of positives despite not winning either game. But this game was a different story.
Gone are the quick counters and heavy pressing that worked so well, replaced by slower, slower attacks that were often cut short. Yes, there were a few who looked lively though, and Tillman and Rhein impressed, but the team looked a little lackluster today for some reason. Of course, the motivation level is usually lower in such friendlies, but Nagelsmann will want to find ways to get his team back on track to inspire confidence in his players and fans alike.

Yes, stranger things have happened in pre-season, but it’s still uninspiring to see Bayern’s pre-season record one draw and two defeats in three games. Nagelsmann’s Bayern are yet to pick up their first win and with the first game of the season looming, some fans may be a little worried. However, remember that the last few games have featured a number of players who will be lucky enough to see first-team football this season, and Bayern’s true strengths have yet to be tapped.
The only regular starter to have played in the last three games has been Upamecano and even he won’t be guaranteed game time unless he impresses in competitive games. We’ll have to wait and see what a full Bayern squad looks like under Nagelsmann and it looks like the first chance we’ll get is against Napoli on Saturday, with most of the internationals returning. Even then, Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer will still be gone, so let’s not get our hopes up too high.
It’s too early to talk about Nagelsmann Out, and we fans shouldn’t overreact to a couple of pre-season losses. Yes, it’s not so nice to see a team go seven games without a win in three games, but nobody wins silverware for pre-season friendlies.
