New York Giants Vs New York Jets – 1. Fifty years after they first played in a preseason game in early 2019, this marks the third time the Jets and the Jets have met in a preseason opener. They also did so in 1983 and 2010, the first NFL games at MetLife Stadium. This is the 51st consecutive summer that the Jets and Jets have met since the series began in 1969. 3. Jones will debut. One player who will definitely see the field, Shurmur said, is rookie quarterback Daniel Jones. He was practicing with the second team, followed by Alex Tanney and Kyle Lauletta. “I’m excited,” said Jones, the sixth overall pick in the draft. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun to run out there for the first time and be part of the scene, be part of an NFL football game. So, I’m excited, I’m looking forward to getting out there.”

5. Injury report. The team will release a “toy” list later tonight, but the following players missed time or were limited in practice this week: WR Darius Slayton (hamstring), CB Sam Beal (hamstring), OT Brian Mihalik (Berner), OT Chad Wheeler ( back), OLB Avery Moss (hip flexor), OT George Asafo-Adjei (concussion). WR Sterling Shepard (broken finger) and CB Grant Haley (shoulder) practiced wearing a yellow non-contact pinny.
6. Notable newcomers. Defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence and cornerback Corey Ballentine have turned heads this summer and Thursday night will be their first time in an NFL game. Neither of the two have ever met.
“First impressions are the best business impressions,” said Lawrence, a first-round pick who grew up a fan “There’s no tension, it’s just going out there and playing football. That’s what I’ve done all my life.”

“I lived in Kansas and I had Kansas City, which was in Missouri,” said Ballentine, selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft. “But I was never a big fan, so I never went to the games. I actually don’t know why I’ve never been to a game. I never got the chance. But I’m excited about (Thursday).”
7. Competition is heating up. Tonight is one of four major auditions for jobs and roster spots, as the 53-man roster must be finalized by 4 p.m. On 31 August. Positions to watch include center, wide receiver and cornerback. John Halapio is currently with the first team at center but looks confident alongside Spencer Pulley. Due to the absence at wide receiver, players like Cody Latimer, Bennie Fowler and Russell Shepard have seen increased reps. In the secondary, Grant Haley and Antonio Hamilton are listed as second-team cornerbacks behind Janoris Jenkins and DeAndre Baker.
8. New P.I. Rules. A major story of the NFL preseason has been the new rules that make offensive and defensive pass interference subject to review. Coaches can now appeal these calls outside of the last two minutes of each half. In two minutes, their stand will be tested. It was first used in the Hall of Fame Game as the Broncos contested a pass interference penalty called on their defense. The call was accepted.
“I really think we all want to do the right thing,” Shurmur said. “There’s going to be a lot of talk about it. It’s going to affect some games, so I think in the pre-season, it makes sense for all of us to throw it in once in a while to see what the answer is.”

9. Classmates. Quarterback Saquon Barkley and Jets quarterback Sam Darnold were selected second and third, respectively, in the 2018 NFL Draft. College superstars played against each other in the highest-scoring Rose Bowl in history, with Penn State and USC combining for 98 points. Barkley had 194 rushing yards, 55 receiving yards, 57 kickoff return yards and three total touchdowns in the 2017 game.
10. See you later. Of the four preseason opponents this year, three will see them again in the regular season. They will play the Jets in Week 10, the Patriots in Week 6 (Preseason Week 4) and the Bears in Week 12 (Preseason Week 2). The all-time regular season lead against the Jets is 8-5, including five in a row from 1996 to 2011.

In a game that featured the debut of a brand new coaching staff and a brand new quarterback for the New York Jets, the early returns were mostly positive.
The Jets defense dominated for the most part, the Jets running game was solid, Jack Wilson was effective in a defensive debut and the result was a win to usher in a new era of Jets football.

As announced, the Jets’ front four dominated early, pressuring Giants quarterback Mike Glennon for a three-and-out. Bryce Huff had one sack early in the game and one later.
When the Jets took control of the offense, Zach Wilson effectively moved the ball on a possession offense. Mixing a solid running game with short and intermediate passes, the Jets drove down the field and kicked a field goal to take a 3 – 0 lead. Wilson got the ball back after the Giants stopped the drive and moved the ball well before the drive. Stagnant in giant territory.
After two drives, the night was over for Zach Wilson and the other starters, and the rest of the game was a back-to-back battle for both teams. Wilson finished 6 of 9 for 63 passing yards and 3 scores. It wasn’t a dominant effort, but Wilson and the Jets offense were effective and quite efficient, running a conservative, ball-handling offense.
The rest of the night featured a ferocious Jets pass game that dominated the Giants’ offensive line, great play from beleaguered Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims, shaky play from the Jets secondary and two Jets backup quarterbacks who weren’t ready for NFL action. Rookie defensive end Jonathan Marshall and sophomore Bryce Huff each caught fire with a couple of sacks.
