That goal, from another summer squad player, ex-Millwall man Jed Wallace, canceled out Middlesbrough’s 10th-minute opener from Isaiah Jones.

It was a much better second half for West Brom after manager Steve Bruce watched Boro dominate in the first half.
The hosts named striker Marcus Force on the bench following his move from Brentford on Thursday. Zac Stephen, Darragh Lenihan and Ryan Giles all started for the first time since moving to the Teesside club.
Stephen was also very involved. The goalkeeper, on loan from Manchester City, was alert to make amends for his lineout, turning Wallace’s superb effort from the touchline onto the bar.
Boro took the lead soon after. When West Brom’s attempts to get ahead failed, the hosts attacked through Giles. Striker Chuba Akpom turned an on-loan pass across the face of goal for Jones to finish from six yards.

The home side then controlled much of the game and looked the more dangerous, but wasted good chances and West Brom stayed in the game.
The best of these came nine minutes before the break when Giles was involved again. After Matt Crook picked out a full-back on the left, his low shot from the six-yard box looked perfect, but Duncan Watmore failed to connect properly and the ball flew wide.
There was still time for Mark Ball to beat the wrists of David Button from distance, but West Brom needed to improve after the restart to avoid defeat on the opening day.
Jason Mollumby fed Wallace down the right and his beautiful run and turn into the area was perfect for Swift to slot past Steffen from 12 yards.

Swift was then denied within minutes when his tricks in the box created an opening and Steffen was alert to stop at his near post.
Force came on from the bench for the first time and Jonny Howson was put wide when Button made a mistake.
However, West Brom had gone close a few more times by the time the full-time whistle blew and Boro should have been just as happy with the point as the visitors.

It was the Baggies who threatened first and Boro stopper Zach Stephen, on loan from Manchester City, had to fight back quickly to push Wallace’s cross onto the crossbar and behind.
Duncan Watmore could have made it two for Middlesbrough, but he couldn’t get to the back of the net.

But it didn’t take long for Boro to start living the dream. Ryan Giles cut in from the left and passed to Akpom who squared the ball perfectly for Jones to tap home when Whatmore failed.
Watmore thought he had a second when he took one neat touch from six yards and finished beautifully with a second, only to be denied by a linesman’s flag before he slotted past Giles and the goal flew into the league.
West Brom quickly got back into the game after the break and equalized when Wallace got down the right and pulled the ball back for Swift to finish.
As the game progressed, Stephen made some key saves from Swift and Wallace, but after that there were few chances to score, with the teams scoring one point apiece.
Match Report: Boro V West Bromwich Albion
Manager Ryan Giles and Darragh Lenihan reflect on the 1-1 draw between rivals Middlesbrough and rivals West Brom.
“He provided on the left what Isaiah Jones provided last season. It’s width, it’s dynamism and he made more open crosses and more balls into the box than anyone else on the pitch. Over his head.”
Chris Wilder says it was a great effort from his Middlesbrough side against a struggling West Brom side to draw 1-1.
Middlesbrough’s Chris Wilder: “I thought we were great. I’m happy with the players. That’s just my opinion and the coaching staff’s. He liked it – I’m not so sure.
Middlesbrough 2 1 West Brom
“I think it’s all there, but I will say we should have been out of sight in the first half because it wouldn’t have allowed West Brom to come back into the game. They’ve got good players and they came back into the game, so overall on the opening day, if you can’t win, you’re not beat. We have a score.”
Steve Bruce hails his side’s second-half performance, but also believes the desire of both sides to win the game as West Brom drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough.
West Brom’s Steve Bruce: “We started well but after the goal we didn’t really get going to be honest. The second half was much, much better and it could have gone either way, wouldn’t I be selfish and say I could eat it but I it felt like a very good game with both teams trying to win.
“It’s never going to be easy to come here for the first game of the season, so we took something and we have to work on it.”
